GTI Sponsors Select Squad for World Championships in Italy

In late 2014, the GTI agreed to sponsor a select squad to participate in the Open World Championships in Rimini, Italy, in June 2015.
Since then, GTI students from across the country have been working hard at national tournaments and squad training sessions in order to prepare themselves for international competition; and to maximise their chances of being selected for funding. Selection criteria included commitment, performance, potential to win, future prospects, fitness, skill, intelligence and attitude.

Over forty GTI members were put forward for consideration, but only a limited number of squad places were available; so Squad Coach Jasper Chow has faced some difficult selection decisions. However, after much careful consideration, we can now announce our World Championships squad:

  1. B. Amigoni
  2. J. Chow
  3. J. Cockburn
  4. O. Connolly
  5. S. Davies
  6. C. Edwards
  7. N. Henryanto
  8. T. Hickey
  9. A. Houlihan
  10. L. Houlihan
  11. M. Houlihan
  12. L. Jennings
  13. D. Lewis
  14. M. McCaw
  15. J. Ordidge
  16. L. Richardson
  17. L. Sanders
  18. M. Stavely
  19. J. Wahid.

The squad includes representation from various GTI schools, including Bridgnorth, Cheltenham, Crewe, Hinckley, Liverpool, Manor Park and North London. All squad members have proven themselves at recent national competitions and Coach Chow has high hopes form his team’s success in Italy.

Choosing such a strong team for this event was only possible because of the GTI’s sponsorship; without it, many students would be unable to consider attending tournaments abroad. The GTI hopes that provision of funding will encourage participation at tournament s and squad training; and that it will continue to provide opportunities for GTI students to excel in international competition.

Good luck to the squad in their preparations for the World Championships. The hard work is just beginning!  More information on GTI national squad training is available on our GTI Squad page.

PS Special thank to Stef Davis for provide news and information on the GTI Squad

GTI Team Takes Top Trophy at LTSI South East Open

The GTI team stormed to victory at the LTSI South East Open Championships, held in Hatfield on 8th March 2015.
It was a busy event, with over 400 competitors taking part. Students from Manor Park, North London, Bridgnorth and Liverpool GTI schools tested their skills against a high standard of opposition; ultimately winning 17 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze medals.

GTI Team Takes Top Trophy at LTSI South East Open

Notable performances included that of GTI Squad Coach Jasper Chow, who struck gold after an unrivalled display in the mens +80kg sparring division; and that of the GTI patterns team led by Miss Mikeala Houlihan, whose sharp demonstration of Gae-Baek earned a second place trophy.
The GTI team’s impressive medal haul placed them at the top the schools table for the event – and they were therefore awarded the prestigious ‘Best School’ trophy. The trophy is currently on tour: it will visit the four GTI schools that supported the LTSI event in order to promote our competitors’ achievements and to hopefully inspire other students to become more involved in competition.
Congratulations to our team! Thanks to coaches Jasper Chow and Pat Houlihan; and thanks also to the LTSI for a well-run and enjoyable event.
Interested in improving your competitive skills? Come along to national squad training and join our winning team! More information is available on our GTI Squad page.
